Harriet became our baby's nanny when he was just 1 month old, and he's now 4 months old.
The interview went well, and she impressed us with her thoughtfulness, gentleness, and kindness. She also appeared to possess the experience we were seeking, and she expressed that she was comfortable with the role and job description.
Our lifestyle is busy; we often work from home or travel.
We went on our first trip together for a weekend away to Belgium. We had dinner plans and a wedding to attend, so we arranged for Harriet to have her dinner before us so she could look after baby while we went with friends. She also attended the wedding as a guest to care for our baby.
After our return, we discussed the trip, and Harriet informed us that she didn’t take the train from Bruges to Brussels as planned. Instead, she opted for a £200 taxi.
She then broke down, revealing that she suffers from severe social anxiety when it comes to traveling or being in public, both abroad and within the UK. She also mentioned her discomfort with dining alone in restaurants or being in solitude in general. Harriet explained that she is currently taking strong anti-anxiety and anti-depression medications, and she believes that the intensity of travel triggers a need for an increase in her medication dosage. This situation is distressing for Harriet; she mentioned that it has been going on for years...
Harriet left that evening after I suggested discussing her travel anxiety regarding the next trip - we had hers and our flights and accommodation booked for the following day to Dubai.
Unfortunately, we did not hear from her again, except through a message from her mother, informing us that she would not be returning to work.
A brief explanation from her would have been greatly appreciated in this situation. However, her sudden silence and failure to respond to our messages was disappointing.

Secondly, we had a deeply disappointing experience with this nanny. From the start, she consistently pushed for responsibilities well outside of her agreed contract, frequently made false statements, and displayed an alarming lack of professionalism. She attempted to manipulate the situation to demand more money, even trying to hold us to ransom toward the end of her employment. She regularly called in sick—often without any doctor’s notes—and used ‘sick leave’ as a tool when things didn’t go her way.
Her personal hygiene was also a serious concern, with frequent burping after meals and poor general cleanliness. Overall, we would not recommend her to any family seeking a reliable, honest, and professional caregiver.
