Nanny - caring for a child with Fragile X Syndrome at home and at nursery

After School and Holiday Club Coordinator – Bishopswood School

Leading a team providing after school and holiday clubs for children aged 5-16 with special educational needs and disabilities using managerial and organisation skills. Regular liaison with the professionals and families to ensure the team are providing the best care. Planning and execution of developmentally appropriate activities, making club an enjoyable, enriching and safe environment for the children. Organisation of trips, staffing, risk assessments, transport and finances. Carrying out personal care, feeding and managing medical and behavioural needs. Positive working relationships built and maintained with all of the children, their families and colleagues.

Babysitting – Caring for a child with GDD
June 2022 – current day
Caring for 3 children in the afternoon and evenings while their parents are out. Using communication skills to work with the youngest sibling in the family, an 8 year old girl with global developmental delay. Her developmental stage is reflective of a typical 18– 24 month old so an adaptable and flexible approach is taken. This role includes supporting eating, bathing, toileting and putting the children to bed.

Personal Assistant – Carer for a child with Autism

Working both at the family’s home and out in the community doing activities on a one to one basis with confidence. Overcoming challenging behaviour and communication difficulties, to build a trusting relationship based on support and reassurance to relieve anxiety. Planning and then communicating the ideas and activities for the day with the child’s parent.

Excellent team work skills developed through working with the team leader and colleagues. While following direction from authority, using intuition and skills to overcome the day to day challenges of working with children. Encouraging the children to engage in play and learning opportunities. Leading sessions such as baking, using leadership, organisation and communication skills.

Confidently communicating with customers to provide a positive and enjoyable dining experience. Dealing with issues efficiently and effectively to keep both customers and employers happy. Making sure that customers felt respected and that their dietary needs were being taken seriously. Taking bookings and pre-orders over the phone.

Developing knowledge of age appropriate activities for the children, in order to play an important role in the team. Setting up and supporting simple activities for the children such as crafts and outdoor play. Getting involved in the activities, playing alongside as well as with the children.

My Qualifications

BSc Psychology and Language Sciences – University of Reading
September 2019 – June 2022
This British Psychological Society recognised course included many modules to my expand knowledge of child development, play and language such as:
PHONETICS AND PHONOLOGY – includes stages in speech sound development and phonological processes in typically developing children.
COGNITION AND LEARNING – understanding and evaluating theories and models of attention, memory and learning.
GRAMMAR AND MEANING – study of the types of linguistic phenomena relevant to typical and atypical language development.
DEVELOPMENTAL AND SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY – understand development of perception, cognition, language, the self, attitudes and intelligence
LANGUAGE PROCESSING - the nature of language processing in children and adults and considering both typical and atypical populations.
Working in parallel with children while studying helped to reinforce the links between the academics and the real life experience of children as they grow and develop. Many of the topics I covered within the degree have been followed up with further specific courses with OpenLearn.

My Availability

Only available for ad hoc babysitting Friday and Saturday nights. Working with a family as a nanny during the week

My Fees

• Babysitting from £12.00 per hour

My fees are from £12 per hour for babysitter rates. This includes tasks such as feeding, bathing, getting children ready for bed, reading stories and putting children to bed.

For nannying I ask £14-16 per hour depending on the hours and the expectations from the role. This includes school runs, cooking dinner, getting children ready for school, packing school bags, making packed lunches, planning and executing activities, plus that expected when babysitting.
