My Summary
About Me
I am a specialist literacy teacher and have a high level of expertise in early literacy teaching and in particular helping children who struggle to learn to read and write.
If you are concerned about your child’s reading or writing or language development or have been told by their class teacher that they are not working at the expected levels for their age in reading or writing, then I can help.
I will carry out diagnostic assessments that will give me insight into the barriers to literacy learning that your child is experiencing. I can then tailor my teaching to meet the unique needs of your child. It is possible that they will have complex learning difficulties but that means that they need to be shown how they can navigate those barriers to be able to read and enjoy reading. All children that I teach make progress and at least 8 out of 10 pupils, who perhaps are amongst the lowest attaining children in their class, will reach age expected levels and continue to make expected progress.
My Experience
I am a qualified primary school teacher with over 15 years of classroom teaching experience in KS1 & KS2. I was the literacy subject lead in my last two schools and appointed as one of the Leading Literacy teachers for Kent. I joined the Kent Advisory service in 2001 and spent 4 years as a National Literacy Consultant, training and supporting teachers and teaching assistants in teaching literacy in the primary phase. I then went on to train in Reading Recovery and now train and support teachers to teach the lowest attaining children to read and write.
My Qualifications
I have a 2nd class honours degree in Textile Design and Business management from Leeds University. I gained my post graduate certificate in education (PGCE) from Southbank University, London and was awarded Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
I have two Master degrees. The first from Goldsmiths, London, in Children’s Literacy. The second from The Institute of Education, London, in Literacy Learning and Literacy Difficulties.
I have the National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) and have trained as an Ofsted Inspector in 2005.
