About Me

Hello,
My name is Shannon. I am 23 years old. I am an enthusiastic and hard-working individual who thoroughly enjoys helping others and making a difference in young people's lives, whether educationally, emotionally, or socially. I have a bachelor's degree in Psychology and currently completing my teacher training so will have my QTS in July. During my free time, I love going for walks, painting/crafts, attending live music concerts, travelling and I am also a qualified nail technician so enjoy creating designs.

My Experience

From sixth form, I went on to study Psychology at university and completed modules such as social and developmental psychology, and atypical child development and also completed a 240-hour work placement at a primary school. These modules and my research were fascinating, and they gave me an understanding of what to look out for in children who may have different needs. I am extremely appreciative of myself for choosing to study psychology as it led me to complete my work placement in a primary school and realise that is what I wanted for my future career. My role included providing 1:1 support for SEN children, conducting intervention classes with small groups of children, several admin jobs and helping at the afterschool club. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the school, and it provided me with several employability skills such as confidence, adaptability, and the ability to be an effective communicator. My university experience in general provided me with a lot of transferable skills as although it was not smooth sailing due to the pandemic I am now an organised individual who can meet deadlines, work under pressure and work independently and just as well in a team.
I then went on to work for an agency as a teaching assistant across different schools in Sheffield. I decided to apply for this position as although I was certain I wanted to be a primary school teacher I felt it was a sensible decision to work at a variety of different schools from nursery, mainstream and specialist primary and secondary to ensure I was making the correct choice. At the start, I was working at a different school every few days meeting new staff and pupils which meant I experienced a lot of change quickly. Although this was sometimes frustrating as I was not able to get to know the pupils in depth to understand how best I could assist, it increased my confidence and adaptability skills drastically for the better. Working in different schools also meant I was going over safeguarding every few days which was beneficial as although the basis is similar each school had its addition to add which I got to widen my knowledge. The agency also sends frequent emails with safeguarding information and videos to keep up to date which is extremely useful.

I also work for SNIPS holiday camp during the school half term, it involves taking children with learning difficulties out into the peak district to do activities such as walks, climbing, biking, archery and various others. Working these camps is extremely rewarding as I can see the children enjoying themselves doing activities they may not be able to do any other time. As it is out in the open and operates on a 1:1 basis it has made me become even more vigilant and able to feel comfortable being responsible for a child’s safety.

Throughout studying I also worked a couple of part-time jobs for extra money however they both gave me experiences and skills I use daily. I worked at a hardware retail store for just over four years, as this was my first job it taught me the importance of punctuality and how to be professional as well as the importance of teamwork and networking. I would also work as a cleaner in schools during the summer breaks of university, I enjoyed this job as I was able to speak with teachers about my plans who would tell me both the rewards and negative aspects of the job which made me more aware, I am still just as eager.

As mentioned previously, I am currently training to be a primary school teacher through the Sheffield SCITT and completing my placement with a year 5 class. I am thoroughly enjoying my time at and am extremely passionate to go into work as I am learning something new every day. My role so far has included observing, taking control of the classroom for certain lessons, planning lessons, marking work, completing reflection performers, and meeting a new team of colleagues and pupils. I also have training sessions each week so I am learning all the national curriculum, safeguarding, how best to support SEN pupils and behaviour skills however, my knowledge on certain subjects is a lot stronger from the research I did and the experience I had before starting this course.
