Hi! My name is Julia and I'm currently a 20 year old 3rd year student studying Philosophy and Theology at the University of Edinburgh! I am Puerto Rican, Colombian, Dominican, and a born and bred New Yorker! I speak fluent English and Spanish, with a strong working knowledge of Portugese as well! Some of my hobbies and skills include reading, writing, doing/making art as well as music (I played piano competitively for 13 years, and have experience teaching!) . I'm a big sister to a 13-year-old girl, whom I adore and miss dearly, and have spent my whole life looking after. I'm very connected to being Latina, I'm very involved in the Latin American community here in Scotland, I am a Committee member of the Latin American Society at the University, and I am the current Social Secretary, a role I'm well suited to, as I am quite friendly and outgoing, and passionate about connecting and sharing my culture with others. I am also extremely dedicated to my degree, and am definitely studious and responsible, as is required for such a challenging Joint Honours MA. Overall, I would say I am extremely patient and flexible, very much a go with the flow, adaptable kind of person, and I love kids. Generally, I think my predisposition to working with people and my experiences in childcare and with my sister have made me uniquely prepared to enjoy and nurture any child and whatever wonderful challenges they may bring. I also have experience teaching piano and am willing to help with homework and/or language learning!
My Experience
Being an older sister with a 7 year age gap has been such a formative experience for me as a person. Not only has our large age gap made it so I experience being helpful and present through a variety of ages, my sister is also intellectually disabled, and through the years I have learned so many different strategies to deal with all sorts of special needs, it has also made me very patient and kind! I adore my younger sister! Additionally I was a overnight summer camp counselor at a music camp back in the US from ages 15-17, where I was responsible for a variety of different childcare roles, including having my own bunk of girls ranging in age from 6-16, I would often be in charge of wake up and bed-time, not just for my own girls but for all the children of the camp, as well as preparing food, running activities, cleaning, as well as teaching piano lessons throughout the day to a range of levels and ages! I loved being a camp counselor, but my favorite part has always been talking and hanging out with my campers, I love giving older sister advice and listening, I've always believed kids have so much wisdom to fun to give! Beyond that I have been a solid babysitting and tutoring/lesson call for a few families in my neighborhood growing up! This childcare experience as well as my skills and hobbies and my experience teaching make me an excellent help not just for babysitting but for the many other tasks and jobs that come with raising and minding kids!
My Qualifications
First aid trained, Summer camp experience, Special needs experience, Secondary School diploma and currently pursuing MA Joint Honours Philosophy and Theology at the University of Edinburgh.
My Availability
Currently, I am in Edinburgh for a few more weeks before returning for the school year in August. I have yet to receive my schedule for the upcoming school year, but I am generally a very flexible person. I am nearly always available for a last-minute call, and I generally prefer to study independently and on my own time, making my hours a lot more flexible than those of other students.
